Why Visit Cycladic Islands
Overview
The name Cyclades comes from the ancient Greek word kyklos (κύκλος), meaning circle — a reference to the way the islands arc around the sacred isle of Delos, mythological birthplace of Apollo and once the most important religious centre of the ancient Aegean. To sail the Cyclades is, in a sense, to orbit that ancient heart.
Scattered across the deep blue of the Aegean, these islands offer some of the most rewarding sailing in the Mediterranean. Reliable meltemi winds, crystalline waters, and whitewashed villages clinging to volcanic hillsides create a backdrop that is both timeless and endlessly beautiful.
Mykonos sets the tone with its cosmopolitan energy and iconic windmills, while nearby Delos — now an uninhabited UNESCO World Heritage Site — offers a humbling glimpse into ancient grandeur. Paros and Antiparos deliver a more relaxed rhythm, with charming harbours and excellent windsurfing conditions. Naxos, the largest of the group, rewards exploration with mountain villages, ancient ruins, and sweeping sandy beaches. Milos captivates with its volcanic landscapes and colourful fishing coves, while Folegandros and Syros offer quieter, more authentic escapes.
The journey culminates at Santorini — dramatic, volcanic, and utterly unforgettable, especially when watched from the deck of a yacht anchored in the caldera at sunset.
Whether you have a week or a month, the Cyclades never disappoint.
